AISI: U.S. Raw Steel Production Surged 3.8%

Feb 20 (LTIT) - The U.S. weekly raw steel output reported significant surge during the week ended on February 16, 2019 over the previous week. This is in accordance with the latest weekly production statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Meantime, the production for the week was marginally lower when compared with the prior week.

 

The U.S. domestic raw steel production in the week ended February 16, 2019 totaled 1.886 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 81.0%. It must be noted that the production had totaled only 1.817 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 77.9% during the same week a year before. Also, the production during the week edged lower by 0.6% when compared with the prior week production of 1.897 million NT.

 

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production by the country totaled 12.737 million NT through the week ended February 16, 2019. The mill capability utilization rate averaged at 80.7% during this period. The production during this period surged higher by 8.4% over the previous year. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump. As per AISI data, the production had totaled only 11.748 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 75.7% during the corresponding year-to-date period in 2017.

 

The major producer was the Southern region, which accounted for more than 38% of the country’s total weekly raw steel production. The region produced 726,000 NT of crude steel. The production by the other regions in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East-219, Midwest-206, Great Lakes-661 and Western-74.
